Dear Friends and Supporters,
Rihanna Nuru is a four-year-old girl from the neighborhood in Addis Ababa called Kirkos. She lives with her father Nuru Sani, her mother Fedele Ali and her older sister Fouzia Nuru.
She joined Fregenet Kidan Lehitsanat (FKL) in September, 2019 as a Kindergarten 1 student. Her Family lives in a 3m X 3m makeshift home made out of scrap materials such as cardboard and tin. They sleep on old rugs and use an improvised toilet with no walls or roof. The more established homes and buildings in the area where they live were demolished a few years back, presumably for gentrification, and the standard for sanitation and hygiene is far below anything the staff at FKL has witnessed since the establishment of FKL.
Rihanna’s largely unemployed father makes very little money as a daily laborer. His income is barely enough to provide food for the family. The family suffers from a chronic lack of the basic minimums for subsistence and faces a continual threat of eviction.
These dire conditions seriously impact little Rihanna as she
usually comes to school tired and sometimes sick. However, thanks to daily
meals, free education and material support (notebooks, pencils and uniform) she
gets at FKL, her life has dramatically improved. Rihanna manages to
maintain an average score in her education. With continued loving care and
generous support, we have hopes that she will be a successful student all
through her school experience.
