Dear Friends and supporters,
We are living through a difficult time which has affected almost everything and everyone. The pandemic has upended life, work, and relationships. The world has exposed many of our deep-rooted problems as a society. At the same time, this global crisis has revealed the depth of our humanity which is expressed through the empathy and solidarity people all over the world have shown for one another, especially for the vulnerable members of our human community. The Fregenet Foundation is a witness to this incredible show of our collective practice of togetherness and solidarity.
As the pandemic has made regular fundraising activities impossible, the Fregenet Foundation, the Fregenet Kidan Lehitsanat board, and staff members have begun exploring avenues to raise funds. We feel the responsibility to provide food and other emergency support to our students and their parents, pay for the salaries of the school’s staff, and cover other expenses of the school.
Over the past two months, the Board and the school staff coordinated efforts to approach different individuals, groups and factory owners. We collected food items like Pasta, Macaroni, Rice, edible oil, wheat flour, Cerifam milk, Biscuits, Soap, Toilet paper …etc. and distributed to the parents of our students in two rounds. The first round of food items was only enough for 75 students in our campus. But the local board members doubled their efforts and garnered more food items to support additional 50 students who have already transferred to grade school in a different public school. The total food distribution was for 200 households for both rounds.
Yenae Collection, Jewelry/Watches, a US-based Ethiopian American business, which also partnered with a local factory in Addis, also donated 500 washable and reusable face masks that were subsequently distributed to our students, their parents and to our staff.
We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Alpha trading partners, Simba Plc., Universal Food Complex, Andinet Association, Sebawi Degaf Zemecha, Sante Clinic & laboratories as well as Yenae Collection, for supporting our students and their parents.
The local board members also collected money from their friends and supporters which amounted to around birr 120,000 to support the school and cover the fixed expenses of salary, facility rent, utilities, and other expenses.
We believe that these and similar activities in Ethiopia and overseas will help support our vital activities at a time of such great difficulty. Poor people in poor countries are potentially the first to bear the brunt of the pandemic and an urgent effort on their behalf is the best opportunity they have to survive the scourge.
Help us to help them. Your support is of utmost importance and will make a difference between life and death for many of our kids and their parents.
